The High Rock Challenge

Staten Island, NY
28 April 2008

High Rock Challenge

Were you a participant in the High Rock Challenge or High Rock 10K Trail Run? Let us know what you thought.

I figured this event would kick my ass...and I was right! But I had a wonderful time! My husband and I had a great time challenging ourselves. Even though I was really struggling at times I still had a giant grin on my face. The challenges where varied and interesting, the park was beautiful and the weather, though chilly at first, worked in our favor. I'm looking forward to next year...

- Danielle Bonanno, Good Hustle

EXCELLENTLY ORGANIZED, GREAT COURSE. THANKS TO ALL THE ORGANIZERS AND VOLUNTEERS. THE AFTER PARTY WAS MUCH BETTER THIS YEAR. EXCELLENT BAND. BUT, THE COLD BEER WAS THE MOST NEED KICKER. I TIP MY HAT TO MATT LEBOW. THX ALOT

- DAN MCSWIGGAN, MCSWIGGANS

Had a blast. The course was fun, people were friendly, and we didn't come in last. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, why can't there be more events like this so close to home?

- David Molinari, Team Tortoise

The race was well put together, I had a lot of fun and look forward to next year! I think a nice BBQ after would make it that much better.

- Michael Galea, Weekend Worriers

One of the best events I have attended on par with NYRRC and The Marine Corp Marathon 07 / the course was awesome I was spent at the end but happy I finished Food was great the music kept us happy and the people helped each other. All I would like to see are the full results for all finishers from fist to last so I can find my friends and make them feel bad or good based on how far back from me they finished or ahead. Otherwise a great race awesome staff and volunteers see you in NYC for the urban bike. Thanks for a great race

- Rob Lacey, The paper Boys

TO THE EVENT PLANNERS AND VOLUNTEERS GREAT JOB!!!!!!!SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.

- Michael A Fermaint, U.S PARK POLICE

This is our third year doing the High Rock - we love it. This year really enjoyed the challenges - course was much harder. Please put the sand bags in the beginning it was really tough in the middle when you were already tired. Thanks to all - we'll be back.

- Donna Taylor, It doesn't get better than this

What a great race!!! My boyfriend and I had a blast. Everyone was so friendly; the course was challenging and fun, and who doesn’t love a cold beer after swimming in the mud! We will definitely be back for more next year!!

- Katherine Griswold, Iya Needashower

What a great time! It doesn't get much better than this. If you are looking for something off the beaten track (and I mean REALLY off the beaten track), you would have a great time at this event. I don't know how they did it, but the event was organized seamlessly, the people were helpful and friendly, the challenges were great, and the after-party was a blast. This was my first time, but certainly not my last (for now, I just need a little recovery time)!

- Tanya O'Keefe, Lemon Lime

Once again, this is my favorite race of the year. A great running course with "Survivor" like challenges in the middle. This year's challenges were the best that I have encountered. Event was well organized and all of the staff were great. Just wish there were more events like this. Keep up the good work- See you next year.

- John Britz, Blue Moon

We came in last, but finished. I would do it again next year.

- Georgia Trivizas

The best race ever, lots of fun and lots of work.see you next year.

- Carolyn Burke, Team Tiger

As a member of the High Rock Challenge planning committee (I don't run in the race), I wanted to say what a terrific and diverse group of runners we had this year. Thank you all for participating in this event that brings such fun-loving people into the Greenbelt and into adventure racing. Our small committee puts much care into the race and we're always pleased to read your feedback. Kudos, in particular, goes to the course designer, Dan Kennedy, who maps the course and conceives and builds the mystery challenges. What will he think of next?! For those of you who are not runners, but would like to get involved, we're always looking for dedicated volunteers. Let us hear from you. Until next year...

- Dorothy Reilly, Greenbelt Conservancy

This was my first High Rock Challenge. I thought the race was very well organized and the trail was marked exceptionally well. Don\'t know if it was beginners\' luck or whatever but I expected it to be much tougher than it turned out. Was very apprehensive about running in wet shoes for a long way but no problem. Only issue - TOO MANY BLANK TILES IN THE POOL! and what was the weight of the sandbag. We were told 20lbs by volunteers but I keep seeing 25lbs publicized.

- Gary, the Young and the Rusted

This is the best time I've ever had at a race!!! Course was excellent, easy to follow & more than adequately staffed. As a Greenbelt activist for most of my adult life, it was a pleasure to see how well the course designer knows The Greenbelt. The challenges were awesome & fun at the same time. Kudos to the Greenbelt Staff, especially Dorothy Reilly, & Jeannie Palisiwat, & The New York Adventure Racing Association, especially a Matt Lebow. Also thanks to my running partner Robert Lacey who carried the 25lb sandbag 80% of the time!! The food was great...but the music...well I guess I'm a fifties kind of a guy.

- Dominick Durso, The Paper Boys

This was a really FUN event!!! My daughter and I will absolutely do it again...however, I really think that 2.2 miles with a 25 pound sandbag is a little unfair for participants like Elena and myself. We only weigh 90 lbs and 110 lbs, respectfully, so to lug such a weight for so long up (hill too) puts small women like us at a serious disadvantage. Perhaps you can rethink the strength aspect of the challenge (not take it out...just rethink it!) Overall, we loved the challenge and the FUN and the people!!!!

- Christine Asperti, The Woodland Faries

What a GREAT race! It was such a great course and it was extremely well organized and marked. Everyone was so encouraging, volunteers and runners alike. This is the second time I have participated, and will definetly do it again and encourage others to do it as well. The party at the Armory was also great too. This is by far the best race of the year on Staten Island.

- Katherine Sprague, Leman and Lime

Required Feedback: I thought this was a great race! I did it in 2001, which I believe was the first, and will definitely be back next year. It was well organized, the course was very well marked and it wasn't too hard or too easy, although I did hear that it gets harder each year! That remains to be seen! Bring it on and I'll see ya next year!
