The Saddle & Paddle

New York Adventure Race Series
Blue Marsh, PA
21 April 2002

This was a well-organized race. Volunteers were helpful, the pre-race check-in was orderly, and the course was challenging. Route selection was very important. Thank you, NYARA.

Byron Lane, Team Cruise Missile

The racecourse was fantastic! The most enjoyable course I have ever done. The course was well plan, the optional swim was an interesting twist - and I still don't know if it was the right option to take, it depends on whether the time save on the shorter route was worth getting soaked - especially when the "dry" bag decides to do an imitation of a sponge. The trails we great, some stayed on the on the clear path and others made some good timing on trails they found that were not on the map. The strategic points collection on the canoe section was a fun idea. That way not everyone was going to the same points and some course calculation was required. It also good when you come away from a race learning something too. I will always beware of solo canoeing now - I did not realize that we were going to be using canoe paddles instead of kayak paddles - if I had not hooked up with another soloist I would still be paddling in circles. The bike section was sooooo much better then I thought it would be. Ok, there were some push your bike up some hills - but it would not have been an AR if there weren't. But the downhills were great! Twisty trails down, but even if you fell it was on some nice soft mud.

I completely loved the race. Great location, I'd like to go do some training there.

Thank you for a great race, a great course, and a great time. It was clear that experienced racers put this race together, and I look forward to following races that are put together by the same team.

P.S. Could you please just make it about 40 or 50 degrees warmer next time? It was a little chilly.

Janice Cahalane, Team Janice Cahalane

Excellent Race...You guys did a great job this year. The event was very well organized and the course was fun. We would have like a longer course, but it was still a great race. We are looking forward to the June race in Harriman.

Rodney Villella, Salmon / Eco-Fishnet ...

Great course, well organized and a ton of fun... but I would not call it a technical bike section, there were no rocks, roots or logs, smooth single track and big hills don't make for technical biking.

Jim Holden, Team Take a Bearing on This ...

We were first timers and had a great time! Well, ok, there were times when we were miserable but it was still great.

Our thanks to all the volunteers standing around in the rain.

John H. Edwards, Team Not Again

This was a well run event and I had a blast. Thanks.

Way to go NYARA!

Joe Brautigam, Team ATP

Best race I've done in the under-24 hour category. Other races in that length tend to eliminate the navigation aspect by marking the course. I think navigation is what adventure racing really has as over other endurance events (tris, marathons, bike races etc...). This race made you navigate from the starting gun until the finish. (OK, the bike leg didn't take much work to navigate but you did have to know where you were on the old abandoned road in order to make the correct turn). Score-O canoeing was terrific. Great job by everybody involved in organizing a fun and challenging race.
