Balance Bar Adventure Sprints Begin in the Bronx
STAMFORD, CT - New York City’s Orchard Beach is the first stop of the eight-city 2003 BALANCE® Bar Adventure Sprints Series, formerly known as the Hi-Tec Adventure Racing Series®. Home to the event since 1998, on May 18, Orchard Beach will be flooded with nearly 1,000 adventure racers, ranging from coed elite teams to first-time adventure racers. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to test your body and your mind in this incredible event. Competitors at the BALANCE Bar Adventure Sprints will test their skills in trail running, mountain biking and kayaking across various park terrains. Additionally, team dynamics, physical and mental strength will be put to the test by the mysterious “special tests” for which the Series has become known. The event will feature between 7 to 10 special tests. In the past, these special tests have included things such as mud pits, vertical climbing walls, running with railroad ties and orienteering. Look for all new and exciting special tests in 2003. “We’re thrilled to open the 2003 BALANCE Bar Adventure Sprints in New York,” said Race Director Nick Moore. “The race will be unique and enjoyable for both seasoned and new adventure racers, alike.” In the BALANCE Bar Adventure Sprints, teams of three complete 5-8 miles of trail running, 10-15 miles of mountain biking, 1-3 miles of kayaking and 8-10 special tests. Divisions include: Coed Elite, Coed, Female, Male, College, Corporate, and a Masters division (combined ages of 120+). The BALANCE Bar Adventure Sprints start the year in New York City and travel to Salt Lake City, UT, June 7/8; Atlanta, GA, June 21/22; Portland, OR; Sacramento, CA, August 16/17; Hartford, CT, September 6/7; Richmond, VA, October 4/5; with the Series final in Los Angeles, CA, October 18/19. The Series offers a spectator festival at each event with special tests and the BALANCE Bar Kids Adventure, a race for children under 10. The BALANCE Bar Adventure Sprints Series is offering a total of $60,000 in prize money between the individual events and overall Series offerings. The BALANCE Bar Adventure Sprints has increased the overall Series prize purse by 87 percent while the individual events boast a 50 percent increase from 2002. Prize money is awarded for first through fifth place contestants of each race as well at the end of the Series. Prize money is awarded in the coed elite divisions only. Teams competing for the BALANCE Bar Adventure Sprints Series championship must compete in four of the eight events, including the Series final in Los Angeles, Oct. 18-19. The BALANCE Bar Adventure Sprint Series will be televised on the Outdoor Life Network in half-hour features (air-dates to be determined).
