NYARA NAVIGATION CLINIC
So, You THINK You Know How To Navigate...
This is a navigation clinic for beginners and even seasoned racers who THINK they know what they are doing, but still get lost occasionally. It will be instructed by Daniel Schaublin - many of you know him from Hudson Valley Orienteering - we know him as one of the best orienteerers around. He will help you beginners get started, and point out some interesting tidbits that you veterans never even thought about.
Remember, all the athletic ability in the world isn't going to help you in a race if you can't navigate your way out of a Volkswagen.
There will be an indoor session to get the day rolling. We will meet in the lobby of the Overlook Lodge at Bear Mountain. Topics include both navigation on orienteering maps (reliable maps) & USGS or other 'incomplete' maps, aerial photographs and other hybrids. The main activity will send everyone outside for a potentially tough AR course with different components, maps, tasks and practice elements. This will be a great training day for all levels. The beginners will be given easier options to practice with.
Gear: Maps will be provided for this clinic; upon completion you can keep the map. Compass Whistle (around neck) Small first aid kit Food and water for 4 hrs of activity
Fees: $15 for NYARA members or $30 for non-NYARA members. If you haven't signed up for your 2008 membership, get on it! You'll end up saving $$ and the membership will more than pay for itself.
